Research
Adds Another Generation Back |
| Warsaw,
April 2000 -- Piotr
and Barbara Paleczny of Warsaw on a recent trip to the area of
Tarnawa Gorna, Krzeszow and Sucha Beskidzka in Poland, uncovered a
wealth of information about the Bartomek and Jacob Paleczny family
trees.
(The Bartomek tree has been
re-named the Melchior tree as a result of this discovery.)
"Results are fantastic and very interesting," they reported
-- with no exaggeration.
"In Sucha, we noted about 25 Paleczny names with their birth
dates, including four brothers and sisters of my grandfather
Jacob," wrote Piotr.
Sucha is just few a kilometres away from Tarnawa
Gorna, the home town
of the Bartomek clan.
|
"The next day we went to Krzeszow to find out what they
have," reported Piotr. "During the mid-18th Century, the
church in Krzeszow also served the people from Tarnawa Gorna. The priest
was very friendly and he showed us archive books where we found your
grandfather Jan's birth record, which indicated he was born on October
18th, 1881."
The Bartomek family tree shows Jan's birth date as October 24th, the
first item we will need to mend.
Piotr and Barbara also obtained the wedding date of Jan's parents,
Jozef and Anna Michalek, who were married in Krzeszow on February 13,
1878. And they found that Jozef was born on February 15, 1852 and died
June 24, 1910.
That's not all.
|
Oh-Oh, Rename the Bartomek Tree ...
They found that Jozef was the son of
Wojciech Paleczny and Wiktoria Branka, the daughter of Jozef and
Wiktoria Barankiewicz.
"Wojciech is the Polish name for
Adalbert,"
he explained. "So, there was no Bartomek!"
"I think Adalbert was called Bartek or something
similar. But it is absolutely certain his name was Adalbert, which in
Polish, is Wojciech," wrote Piotr.
That
too, is not all.

... to Melchior and Marianna
"There is more. Your great great great grandfather was Melchior and
he was married to Marianna!!!!!!!!" is what Piotr typed in his
email, his fingers hitting the keyboard like a celebratory note on his
piano.
"We don't have more only because the priest could not give us
more time. But it was very exciting to look at those old books and
documents."
In addition, Piotr came away with information to add to his immediate
family tree. "We found a document stating the birth date of
my grandfather."
Piotr's grandfather, Jacob, was born July 7, 1865. He was a son of
Jan (John) and he was grandson of Jacob and Agnieszka Zmija. |
This is big news
What Piotr and Barbara were able to find amounts to the
addition of another generation back in time, plus more accurate dates
and names for what we had already.
"It makes me even more optimistic that we can find their
brothers and sisters and possibly link several of the families
together," said Ray Paleczny, who is pulling together all of the
family trees.
"The interesting thing," Ray remarked after hearing Piotr's
news, "is when you look at the family tree for Jozef. He had a son
named Jan and a grandson named Jozef Jan, then Jozef Jan had a son named
Wojciech. The similarity of names makes me think that Jozef may have been a brother or closely related to our great great
grandfather Wojciech (Bartomek)." |
For The
Record
Piotr and Barbara's research turned up the
following information about the Bartomek family tree:
- The correct birthday of Jan (October 18th, 1881), who is the
grandfather of family members in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario.
- The birthday of great grandfather Jozef (February 15, 1852)
and his date of marriage to great grandmother Anna.
- The correct name of great, great grandfather
Wojciech,
as well as the name of great, great grandmother Wiktoria Branka.
- The names of great, great,
great grandparents -- Melchior and Marianna.
Piotr and Barbara also found this information for the Jacob family
tree:
- Piotr's grandfather, Jacob, was born July 7, 1865.
