Outstanding
Poles
by
Tim Paleczny

| We
often hear about the “unsung hero” – a person whose noble actions
are not recognized. Similarly, as a family of Polish heritage, we could
talk about our “unsung culture.” In fact, the world has been
influenced most favorably by the accomplishments of outstanding Polish
people.
This page introduces The
Paleczny list of outstanding Poles, which is more detailed than the
list below and "A work in progress." Following are the
highlights.
|
| The
father of modern astronomy

|
In
the 16th Century, Copernicus changed humanity’s view
of the cosmos. He developed a heliocentric theory that said the earth
was not the center of the universe, but revolved with the planets around
the sun. His theory challenged Ptolemy’s theory of an Earth-centered
universe that had dominated the world of astronomy for 1,500 years.
Copernicus is an individual who had the courage and the strength to
stand up for his convictions. |
One
of the greatest composers
of all time

|
The
most prominent Pole in the world of music was Chopin, a true
genius of music who is mentioned alongside the world’s greatest
composers such as Bach, Mozart and Beethoven. |
A
literary master
in English

|
People
around the world will always be impressed by the genius of Joseph
Conrad, who learned to speak English at the age of 20 and went on to
write literary masterpieces in the English language. |
| A
pope

|
No
list of outstanding Poles would be complete without Karol
Jozef
Wjotyla,
a Polish poet, philosopher and theologian, who, in 1978,
became
Pope
John Paul II, the chief defender of religious freedom and human rights.
He was the first Slav to be pope, the first non-Italian pope since
Adrian VI, the youngest pope elected since Pius IX, the first pope to
visit a synagogue (1986), and the first pope to visit a mosque (2001).
Surviving an assassination attempt in St. Peter's Square in 1981, Pope
John Paul II epitomizes the Polish peoples’ proclivity for tolerance
and the inclusion of all people as part of the human family. |
Heroes
and leaders

Sobieski at Vienna
Marcello Bacciarelli, 1783. |
There
were many prominent and noteworthy people of Polish heritage who made
significant achievements in all areas though most notably in medicine,
science, education, religion, film and government. This list includes
true Polish heroes such as Jan
III Sobieski and Marshall Josef
Pilsudski who provided leadership and fought bravely against
invading armies and won, and Rose Schneiderman and Lech Walesa
who worked with colleagues in government to find political solutions. |
Nobel
Prize
winners

|
Polish
people throughout the ages have accomplished great things as leaders in
their respective fields. As of 2001, there have been 22 Nobel Prize
winners of Polish descent since the Nobel Prizes were established in
1901, such as two-time winner Marja
Sklodowska Curie. |
| Though
not all of us can climb to these heights, we may share in the glory.
Everyone around the world, particularly those of us who are of Polish
descent, can teach our children about the accomplishments of Polish
people and the international respect that they have earned. Know them
and discover a part of your heritage. |

If
you feel someone of great importance is missing, contact me with your
information. Perhaps it is someone in your own country who is
Polish-born or who has Polish heritage and has made a difference. We’d
like to hear about them! Tim@Paleczny.com
