Happy Birthday Aunt Bea!
Beatrice Marie
Paleczny (nee Boegel) will celebrate her 90th birthday on May
4th, 2001. Beatrice is the wife of Micheal Jerome Paleczny, who was
the eldest son of John and Frances (Kunda) Paleczny. Most of us
know her as simply Aunt Bea, though she is
Great Grandma to Callum, Sarah,
Zachary and the "shakin' baby" whose birth story is told below.
Beatrice still lives in her own house,
looks after herself, drives her own car and walks to church regularly. She
is an avid bridge player, playing two or three times a week. It was only
two years ago that she had to give up golf and walking eighteen holes
because of an arthritic knee.
Happy Birthday, Beatrice!
Send your birthday greetings
to Aunt Bea via Peter Paleczny.
Paleczny baby does
the shake, rattle and roll
Saanichton B.C. -- March 4, 2001 -- Taking his cue from the greatest
vibrations Nature can muster, a Paleczny baby has come into the world with
a little 'shake, rattle and roll' all of his own.
At precisely 10:55 am on March 4, the Canadian west coast shook with
the rocking contractions of an earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter
scale, and Wendy Paleczny, who lay in the bathtub supported by her
husband Jeffrey, also shook with the seismic birthing sensations of
the final stages of birth.
"We were
focusing on our breathing as Wendy lay in the bathtub ... I was thinking
this is it, I am about to become a father. At that moment, I thought I was
feeling waves and shakiness of faintness from this thought. Then I
realized that other things were shaking in the bathroom. Wendy, who was in
between having a contraction, hollered ‘EARTHQUAKE!'"
The earthquake, centred near Seattle, was felt by many in the Victoria
area.
"For us, it had a particular significance because the quake seemed to
move or guide things along in the birth process," the new father said. "I
immediately set up our birth pool in the family room because we had
planned a home water-birth with a birth attendant and a doula. However, we
thought that we had until at least that evening before the actual birth. I
think that the baby had other ideas about his imminent arrival after the
earthquake."
Wendy’s birth process began progressing very rapidly, and after being
in the birth pool for just over an hour, a healthy baby boy was born into
his father hands. The birth attendant arrived minutes before the birth and
the doula arrived just moments afterward.
"I was overcome the moment my son was born as I realized what an
incredible experience it was and how my wife's contractions mirrored the
earth's waves and shaking," Jeff said.
Mother, father and baby are now resting comfortably at home as they
enjoy getting to know each other during their ‘babymoon’. "The earthquake
was his signal to be born," said Wendy, "the world was calling him."
The proud grandparents are Paul A.
Paleczny and Cindy Bouffard of Waterloo, ON and Patricia J.
Paleczny (Forwell) of Waterloo; great grandmother Beatrice Paleczny
of Waterloo; Trent and Marcy (Mazurek) Brookes of Waterloo; and
great grandmother Lydia Mazurek of Colborne, ON.
Send
your congratulations to Wendy and
Jeff Paleczny
Pictures and the full earth-birthing story.

Sr. Barb launches
new book
Sr.
Barb Paleczny's new book, Clothed in
Integrity: Weaving Just Cultural Relations And the Garment Industry,
was launched by Wilfred Laurier Press at the American
Academy of Religion conference in Nashville, TN, in November 2000.
"The book looks wonderful and Barb was very
pleased," said Betty Anne Field, Barb's sister, who lives in
Chattanooga, TN and was able to join Barb for the event. "The book has a
very nice presence about it -- an appealing cover and size. Plus the spine
is clear and distinctive, and will be noticed on the shelf."
The artwork
on the inside is one of Sr. Barb's pieces of art. "The type is a readable
size and the text is well laid out," she added.
According to Betty Anne, Barb was in her
element at the conference. The receptions, hosted by Wilfrid Laurier Press
of Waterloo, Ontario and St. Michael's College of Toronto, Ontario to fete
the Canadian scholars in attendance, gave Barb a chance to catch up with a
lot of friends, colleagues and acquaintances.
"She took every opportunity to share her
book with everyone -- 'after six years in the making!' she said,"
explained Betty Anne. The book, which is Barb's fourth, is the finishing
touch to her doctoral studies that included several years of work on
social justice issues.
Betty Anne said "the Opryland Hotel, with
3,853 guest rooms and beautiful atriums, gardens and walkways all decked
out for Christmas, was an extraordinary beautiful location for the
conference."
Family and friends
may order the book from Jack. If
you send him a cheque for $25, he will pick up the book from WLU, and get
it to you. The $25
includes taxes and delivery, which compares with $29.95 plus taxes in
stores. Wherever possible the delivery will be through family channels.
Money saved that way will cover shipping to customers in less convenient
locations.
For more
information about the book, please see Barb's
Book Launch.

2. What was Happening |
| Sister Francesca
March 08, 2001 - Sister Francesca was
leaving St. Anne's to play Bridge and fell on the ice beside her car.
Another Sister found her a little while later and called the ambulance.
Sister Francesca was taken to St. Mary's Hospital where she was treated
for either a dislocation or fracture. For details, contact
Rita & Henry Mroz.
Sister Joanette
Sister Joanette suffered a slight
heart attack on November 24, 2000. She was in St. Mary's Hospital in

weeks. She is back at St. Louis Convent.
Family Tree Sleuthing: Still coming
together
December 5, 2000 -- "I have been able to contact one
of the Palecznys in France and have started another family tree," wrote
Ray Paleczny in an email. "I sent another email to them today asking
for more details on the information that I put together out of the
original email message. I have two or three more of them that I should
prepare and send to you for the web site ..."
June 19, 2000 -- "I am working on a new Paleczny
Family Tree for a Wilbur Paleczny and it looks as if it may end up in the
consolidation of his tree, the Adam Tree and the John Paul Tree," wrote
Ray another time. "I have to contact people in those other two trees to
see if they have any input that can confirm the links."
"I found Wilbur's email address on a military web
site and contacted him. He said that he had visited our web site in the
past. Also that his grandfather, Walter Joseph Paleczny, Sr., came from
Michigan and had brothers there. I asked him to check the Adam Paleczny
tree on our web site to see if the Walter listed there was his
grandfather. He replied that he thought that it was as he remembered going
to his grandfather's funeral the same year as the date of death for
Walter.
"My reason for contacting Joseph is to find out if
he knows his uncle Walter's middle name and also his uncle John's middle
name as I suspect that John Paul Paleczny may be the John in that same
tree. I am contacting Michael to find out if he knows anything on his
grandfather's date of death and if he had any brothers. The information
that I get from them may confirm whether or not they are linked." --Tim.
Running in the Family
Looking through a few old
email messages I found one from Joe
& Vivian Paleczny of Des Plaines, Illinois that might be of interest
to any runners that we have in the family. It's dated November 21, 1999.
"We just returned from Orlando
Florida where Joe and I competed in the National Senior Olympics which
took place at Disney World from Oct. 19 - 29th. They gave awards up to 8th
Place. Joe did a triathlon and he came in 4th place. He also competed in a
5K run and came in 7th. And he did a 10K run and got a 4th place award in
this. I competed in the 5K run, the 10K run and 1500 meters on the track,
which is just a little short of a mile. I did not get any awards, but I
had a lot of fun. In order to compete in the Nationals you have to compete
in your State and receive a 1st, 2nd or 3rd place and then you can go on
the the Nationals."
What an achievement! Do we
have any other runners out there? --Ray.
What is a Ratite?
A ratite is a member of the ostrich,
emu and rhea families. If you want to learn more you can ask one of the
directors of the Ontario Ratite Association,
Steve Paleczny.

Email: April
28, 2000 -- Hello to all the
Paleczny Clan
Thanks for the info and
keeping me up-to-date. It's good to see that one concert with an excellent
pianist who, as I suspected, turned out to be your distant relative from
Poland, has sparked such an interest in family roots and brought you
closer together. Congratulations.
A note about one of the first
names I've noticed in your family tree. Almost certainly it is not
CZESTOW, but CZESLAW (Czeslaw), a popular Polish name. The misspelling
probably comes from two factors.
1. The fifth letter is not
really an "L", but a separate letter which exists only in the Polish
alphabet. It is pronounced like "W" in English, and is written like an "L"
with a DIAGONAL slash across. It is easy to mistake the lower case for a
"t", as the only difference is that a slash is diagonal and not straight
across. "L" is a closer letter to it. The old pronunciation was a
combination of sounds between the English "W" and "L", something which
nowadays only actors and older folks still do. In any case, in English, in
lieu of this letter, "L" must be used, not "T". Some examples of Polish
words with this letter are: latwo = easy (not tatwo), ladny = beautiful
(not tadny), poludnie = noon (not potudnie), or in names: Wlodek (not
Wtodek), Wieslaw (not Wiestaw), Ludmila (not Ludmita), etc.
2. The "O" was probably the
Americanization of the pronunciation. If in doubt, Piotr can perhaps shed
some additional light on this.
I invite all of you to visit
my web sites. Greetings to all the Clan,
Grzegorz Nowak
