The southern USA retains a teacher, writer and painter

May 23, 2000 -- Sr. Barb Paleczny has accepted a new assignment that will keep her in the southern USA.

The southern USA leadership team for Sr. Barb's community, the School Sisters of Notre Dame, has asked her to coordinate their Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation ministry, starting in July.

This half-time position includes issuing a bulletin every five weeks, writing official communication letters, gathering area reps for once or twice-yearly workshops and representing the south at North American gatherings. The first one is a two-day conference on Global Solidarity at the United Nations, August 28-30.

Sr. Barb recently completed her two-year appointment as visiting professor at Incarnate Word University, San Antonio, Texas, where she taught theology and ethics.

Sr. Barb exhibits her art

In March, Sr. Barb had a solo water color exhibit at the University of the Incarnate Word. "Since I paint mostly my dreams, many people shared their own experiences and dreams with me," she said. "It was fascinating for me to hear everyone's reactions." She sold two paintings and was invited to be featured artist of the month in June, 2000 at the Wild Horses Gallery in downtown San Antonio.

In addition, the gallery purchased her painting of wild horses, splashing through the surf on a beach -- a scene from one of her dreams.

In June, her paintings will be exhibited along with a very well established artist at St. Mary's University.

"What a surprise all of this is!" wrote Barb.

WLU Press set to publish Sr. Barb's book

Wilfrid Laurier University Press in Waterloo, Ontario is set to publish Sr. Barb's book, Clothed in Integrity: Weaving Just Cultural Relations and the Garment Industry. Her art work for her book is on the cover of the WLU Press catalogue. "The only work I still have to do is check the galley sheets and write an index whenever the publisher gives it to me."

The book will appear later this year. For information or to obtain a catalogue, go to www.wlu.ca/~wwwpress/, email press@wlu.ca, or phone 519-884-0710 ext. 624.

Is the southern USA agreeable to Sr. Barb?

Even from a distance, that is, way up here in Canada, it is clear that Sr. Barb is having the time of her life -- teaching, writing and painting, and being recognized for her work. It is no surprise that her generosity of spirit, talent, intelligence and hard work, are very agreeable to the southern USA.

Congratulations on your successes, Barb, from all of us, and good luck!

In addition to her half-time job, Barb plans to write a book about the power of images and symbols, and paint, she said. You may reach her at paleczny@universe.uiwtx.edu
