Arriving in America
Via Ellis Island

by Ray Paleczny

The Carmania

Jan Jozef Paleczny, who emigrated to Kitchener, Ontario, Canada in 1907, arrived on the Carmania. Commissioned in 1905, the Carmania boasted the first steam turbine engines in a passenger liner.

For so many years we knew very little about the arrival of our grandparents in Canada. Then in the spring of 2001, I learned about the Ellis Island web site, which lists the arrivals through Ellis Island, New York, between 1900 and 1921. I  found several of our Paleczny ancestors in the US and Canada listed in the arrivals at Ellis Island, the port of entry for 22 million immigrants who arrived in North America between 1892 and 1924.

The list includes various spellings of the Paleczny name, including the feminine version - Paleczna. The immigration officials at Ellis Island were notorious for misspelling names and in some cases changing them or anglicizing them so our search included several, but not all possible variations, of misspellings of the name. You can see some of the errors in spelling for the town or city of residence. There are several versions of Tarnawa Dolna, Tarnawa Gorna and Zembrzyce.

Our list below also includes the year of birth (YOB) as a reference. Due to the fact that the person’s birthday could have been prior to the date of arrival, the actual year of birth could be one year earlier. The other descriptors include: Gender, Male or Female and M/S, which refers to Marital Status, i.e. Married or Single. Tthe information for several individuals on our Paleczny family trees are bolded. One of these bolded entries, for Jozef Jan Paleczny who arrived in 1913, was not included in the information from the Ellis Island web site. The information came from his descendants. This points out the fact that there were probably others that were either not included or that were listed under another spelling. If you recognize dates or can provide me with additional details to identify others, please let me know.

The bolded entry for 17 May 1907 for Jan Paleczny is the record for Jan Jozef Paleczny who emigrated to Kitchener, Ontario, Canada.

There are several feminine members of the family with the last name spelled as Paleczny. I assume that they married a Paleczny or are the younger members of the family traveling under their fathers names. There are also a few cases of male members of the family with their last name spelled using the feminine version, Paleczna. They are usually younger children traveling with their mother. In many cases, the father of the family had emigrated alone, and when he had accumulated enough money, his wife and children followed. It appears that there were several married males traveling alone and then later on their spouses and children arrived. The oldest listed was Franz Paleczny from Tarnawa Dolna who was 56 when he arrived in 1910 and the youngest was Wladyslaw (Walter) Paleczny who was 14 years old when he arrived in 1921 to join his two older brothers Jan and Antoni, who had arrived in 1911 and 1913. The older brothers were each 17 years old at the time of their arrival (all three are bolded entries listed in the family tree for Adam Paleczny).

Pictures and detailed information on the ships named are also available on the Ellis Island web site.
